James Dean Jr. will be the dean of UNC-Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, the university said Thursday.

Dean, who is currently senior associate dean of at academic affairs, will assume his new job on Aug. 1. His appointment was confirmed by the UNC Board of Trustees on Thursday.

Dean is a professor of organizational behavior and strategy at Kenan-Flagler. He has taught there since 1997.

"Jim Dean is a proven educator, business thinker and administrator," said UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp. "We’re so pleased to attract him to the top job at Kenan-Flagler Business School."

W. Steven Jones, dean for the past five years, steps down July 31.

Dean had been recommended to succeed Jones last month by a search committee. He also has served as an associate dean of executive development and associate dean of the master of business administration program.

A graduate of Catholic University with a degree in psychology, Dean received his master’s and PhD in organizational behavior at Carnegie Mellon University.
