Forestry veteran Wayne Barfield leaves MeadWestvaco after 35 years of service to join ArborGen as general manager, U.S. Commercial Operations and will oversee operations of recently acquired U.S. nursery and seed orchard businesses.

Most recently, Barfield served as vice president of Forest Research at MeadWestvaco and as a board member for ArborGen, a world leader in forest tree improvement technologies. He also serves as a board member for several other forestry related organizations including: the Institute of Forest Biotechnology, University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry and the Natural Resources Advisory Committee, and the Southern Forest Research Partnership.

Barfield has a Master of Science degree in Environmental Management from Duke University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from the University of Georgia. He holds membership in the Society of American Foresters, the South Carolina Forestry Association and The Nature Conservancy.

“Wayne is a great addition to the ArborGen team and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our organization,” notes Barbara Wells, Ph.D, president and chief executive officer of ArborGen. “Wayne will oversee our commercial production, sales and distribution operations and lead our market expansion in providing forest landowners access to ArborGen’s rich and broad portfolio of superior pine products including Mass Control Pollinated (MCP), and varietals as well as hardwood products and high-value future biotech-enhanced products currently in our development pipeline. These products will provide vital and cost-effective structural lumber as well as feedstock for both bioenergy and pulp production in the southern U.S.”
