G. Wayne Clough will step down as president of Georgia Tech on July 1 and become the head of the Smithsonian Institution.

Clough was the first Tech alumnus to lead the university. He announced his decision on Saturday.

“I leave Georgia Tech with a debt of gratitude to everyone who helped the Institute become the premier institution of higher learning that it is today,” Clough said in a statement. “I am proud of all that we accomplished with the help of our faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends.”

Clough took over as the Georgia Institute of Technology’s 10th president in September of 1994.
