Jonathan Miller, former chairman and chief executive officer of AOL, is the newest member of the board at venture-backed Motricity.

And Miller says he finds the mobile content applications provider that has raised more than $300 million in venture capital is a “fascinating” company.

In an interview with the Moco News Web site, also said he thought Motricity was “through the toughest part” of its merger with the mobile business unit of InfoSpace.

Last week, Motricity announced it would lay off 250 of its 350 workers in Durham and move its headquarters from Durham to Bellevue, Wash. That’s where the InfoSpace unit that Motricity acquired last fall is based.

Miller is a founding partner of investment firm Velocity Interactive Group, which is a Motricity investor.

“What’s fascinating about Motricity is that $1 billion of carrier-related revenue currently goes through it, which generates over $100 million [in revenue] for them,” Miller told Moco. “And that is just a really advanced ad scale platform that touches the entire mobile industry in the United States. We were attracted by a wide range of opportunities that it presents.”

Miller also noted that Ryan Wuerch, chairman and CEO of Motricity, would move to Washington. The company has said some members of its Durham operation will be offered the opportunity to relocate.

“It’s just gone through a merger and consistent with many mergers the company’s being restructured,” he said in the interview. “The CEO and the company has made a commitment to move to Seattle. I think they’re through the toughest part, though none of these things are ever easy for the people involved.”

Before helping launch Velocity, Miller was chairman and CEO of AOL from 2002-2006.

“Jon brings tremendous strategic and operational expertise to Motricity,” Wuerch said in a statement. “He has incredible vision, and great experience in defining strategies for companies in emerging, high growth sectors. He understands the complexity of our ecosystem and how to structure a business that scales. He’ll add substantial value to Motricity as we continue to grow. We’re thrilled to welcome Jon to our Board.”
