RTI International will more than double the size of its work force at a call center in Raleigh, adding 600 jobs.

The positions, which are for temporary contract employees, are needed to help RTI fulfill a federal contract for a survey. However, RTI plans to grow its call center beyond the requirements of the current contract.

“The lease on the expanded space is for five years and we plan to fill the additional interview seats through the length of the lease,” an RTI spokesperson said.

Interviewers pay starts at $10 an hour. Available positions include helpdesk agents, tracers and quality control supervisors. Supervisor pay begins at between $10.50 and $14 per hour.

Some 250 people currently work at the center, which is located at 5265 Capital Blvd.

Of the 600 new positions, 100 are set aside for interviewers who will work from home.

RTI also will double the size of the call center to nearly 18,000 square feet from the current 10,300 square feet.

The workers are being hired for an RTI contract with the U.S. Department of Education worth nearly $38 million. RTI is conducting a survey for the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study. More than 200,000 hours of interviews are planned over a six-month period.

"The call center’s growth will give RTI extra capacity for taking on additional large interviewing projects in the future," Richard Heman-Ackah, RTI’s director of Call Center Services, said in a statement.
