Jason Shannon, former lead wireless architect at EarthLink Municipal Networks, is the new chief technology officer at consulting firm Civitium.

Civitium works with municipalities and other groups to design high-speed public broadband networks with a particular focus on wireless fidelity (WiFi) technology.

EarthLink recently pulled back from its efforts to build a number of WiFi networks in partnership with several city governments.

Civitium continues to pursue citywide network projects. In September, the city of Los Angeles picked Civitium to advise it on a project.

As CTO at Civitium, Shannon will help shape the firm’s strategy and also expand its product offerings.

Civitium has been a pioneer in municipal networks.

"The perpetual evolution of the wireless broadband ecosystem introduces new and exciting opportunities for communities," Shannon said in a statement. "Civitium has been at the forefront of this emerging market from its inception, and I’m honored to be a part of the firm’s continued growth.”

While at EarthLink, Shannon was involved in projects in Philadelphia, Anaheim, Calif., and New Orleans.

Shannon also has experience in WiMAX as well as optical wireless and point-to-point microwave technologies.

"Jason brings a wealth of experience in complex, large-scale wireless broadband initiatives to the Civitium team," said Greg Richardson, Civitium’s founder and managing partner. "His knowledge and abilities will help our clients separate fact from fiction in this dynamic market, and his insights will help guide the firm’s overall strategy and direction.”
