The Carolina OpenSource Initiative group will host a “Software Freedom Day” celebration on Friday at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The event, which lasts all day, will include open-source software demonstrations and a variety of guest speakers. Activities will take place at the FPG Student Union.

Among the demonstrations will be TheOpenCD, which is a compilation of open-source software for users of Microsoft Windows and Ubuntu with Beryl. The package includes 3D desktop applications.

Speakers include Max Spevack, the Fedora project leader at Linux software developer Red Hat, and Amit Bhutani, a senior Linux engineer at Dell.

The COSI group was founded earlier this year to facilitate greater cooperation among Triangle-area individuals and groups interested in open source.
