John Board, an associate professor and the associate chair of electrical and computer engineer at Duke, is taking on additional duties as associate chief information officer.

Board was named to the post on Friday by Duke CIO Tracy Futhey.

Board will continue to teach at the Pratt School of Engineering.

“One of John’s primary responsibilities will be to champion the innovative and appropriate use of information technology and provide leadership in balancing needs and benefits against technical and financial considerations,” Futhey said in a statement.

Board earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering at Duke and a doctorate in theoretical physics at Oxford University. He has conducted research in distributed and parallel computing.
