Wipro Technologies, an international information technology services provider, will open a software development center in Atlanta that will create up to 500 jobs.

The center initially will employ 200 people, according to Wipro Chairman Azim Premii, who was in Atlanta on Monday to make the announcement. The first people hired will be software engineers.

Wipro, which maintains its headquarters in Bangalore, India, employs some 6,000 people in the U.S. and 80,000 around the world.

The University of Georgia system will provide training for the new workers.

"Wipro told us what they needed, and the University System of Georgia responded with a comprehensive workforce development program," said Erroll Davis Jr.,the Georgia system’s chancellor, in a statement. “With ICAPP (Georgia’s Intellectual Capital Partnership Program), we tapped into the resources of Georgia’s 35 public colleges and universities to find the best solution for this company. Kennesaw State University and Southern Polytechnic State University are collaborating with Wipro to create an innovative curriculum development and delivery system."

The development center is the first for Wipro in the U.S. The expansion is part of the firm’s strategy to expand its business in the U.S. and to provide what it called “closer-to-customer service.”

“The work we’re doing requires more and more knowledge of the customers’ businesses, and you want local people to do that,” said Wipro’s Americas Chief Executive Officer P.R Chandrasekar. “The Atlanta center is an investment that will help Wipro’s existing customers as well as help address new business opportunities.”

Winpro stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol WIT.
