Pharmaceutical Product Development is going to more than double its operation in Scotland, creating some 390 additional jobs, the company said Monday.

The company, which is involved in a variety of pharmaceutical services and drug development, received a government grant of approximately $9 million as an incentive for the project.

PPD (NASDAQ: PPDI) currently employs 350 people in Scotland.

As part of a $30 million investment, PPD will build a 34,0000 square foot facility, similar in size to one opened earlier this year. PPD plans to add jobs in biostatistics, data management, pharmacovigilance, product development and clinical trial management and monitoring.

"With the biopharmaceutical industry increasingly relying on global outsourcing to speed drug development and reduce costs, demand for our services continues to grow," said Fred Eshelman, chief executive officer of PPD, in a statement. "Scotland offers both intellectual and technical resources that make it an important hub for our global clinical research operations."
