RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Epic Games, the Raleigh-based interactive game developer that produced such hits as “Gears of War” and “Unreal Tournament,” is going to be making news over the next few days.

Unfortunately, Mark Rein, Epic’s marketing chief, isn’t disclosing any details.

“We have press conferences on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,” Rein said by phone from Chicago’s O’Hare airport. He and six other Epic members were en route to Los Angeles for the annual E3 show, which opens on Wednesday. However, he wouldn’t confirm or deny rumors swirling in the game industry about what Epic will disclose.

Among the rumors is that Epic will disclose a “Gears of War” for the personal computer. The game was a smash hit when released late last year, selling more than 2 million copies in the first six weeks. Epic developed the game for Microsoft.

The Epic crew will be busy, regardless of the specifics.

Tonight, Epic and Microsoft are having a press conference to disclose information about the Xbox game platform.

On Wednesday, Epic will be part of a press conference with Sony. A possible new title by Epic for Sony’s PlayStation platform could be disclosed.

On Thursday, Epic is teaming up with publisher Midway Games for another press event.

Unlike in years past, the E3 show won’t play host to scores of companies and thousands of gamers in one venue in Los Angeles. This year, individual companies are hosting events at a hotel with media representatives invited to receive the latest updates.

The event is now called the E3 Media & Business Summit.
