RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Epic Games just could be making a couple of epic-sized announcements at the E3 game show this week.
Rumors are hot and heavy that Epic, which is based in Raleigh, will announce a PC version of its mega-selling hit “Gears of War” plus a contract with Sony to develop an “exclusive” project for Sony’s PlayStation 3.
The Gears of War announcement is expected on Tuesday, and a video clip of soldiers in action has already leaked. (See link to YouTube.) The title already has won numerous awards and is one of the all-time best sellers for the Microsoft Xbox platform. Microsoft paid Epic some $20 million to develop the title.
One blogger wrote that the leaked film clip “is making me rethink ways to get my hands on an entirely new PC.”
Epic has made no secret of the fact that it was developing a PC version. It was just a matter of time. Apparently the wait is over.
The most intriguing announcement, however, could be a Sony-Epic deal.
Advanced Media Network reported over the weekend that the game is not related to Gears of War.
Epic isn’t the only game company that should receive a lot of attention this week. Funcom, which is based in Norway and operates its U.S. headquarters in Durham, is expected to show off its “Age of Conan” game.
The title is part of the Microsoft Games for Windows series.
