BD Biosciences will add 100 jobs as part of a $25 million expansion of its Discovery Labware manufacturing facility in Treyburn Corporate Park, the company said Thursday.

Twenty-eight jobs are expected to be created this calendar year with the remainder of the new positions being added next year.

The plant will add approximately 50,000 square feet of manufacturing space.

Some 285 people currently work at the plant.

BD Biosciences is part of BD, which recently shortened its name from Becton, Dickinson and Company. Its headquarters is located in New Jersey. BD is a medical technology company focused on production of medical devices, instrument systems and reagents

The Durham facility is used to produce laboratory equipment that is used in drug discovery.

“Treyburn offers an ideal platform as BD looks to increase capacity to meet demand for our Discovery Labware products,” said Todd Shackett, the plant manager of the Treyburn facility, in a statement. “We are able to build upon our own successful manufacturing operations, as well as the pool of high-tech expertise in this region. We couldn’t be more pleased to be growing in Durham. Today’s moves will provide the cornerstone for future development.”

The plant has been used for Labware production since 1991.
