Muzak, a provider of music for businesses, is considering merging with DMX, a competitor.

The two firms said late Thursday that they are seeking federal government approval for a “future consolidation or combination.”

A merger is contingent upon the combined company being acquired by a third party, which was not identified, the companies said.

DMX is based in Austin, Texas. In addition to music, DMX offers video, messaging and environmental “scents” to create what it calls “multi-sensory environments” for clients.

While the process is underway, Muzak and DMX said they would operate independently.
