RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Nortel will team with NDS, a networking firm based in the United Kingdom, to offer a variety of Internet Protocol TV services.
IPTV is one of the strategic growth areas identified by Nortel. The company has set up a lab for IPTV research at its campus in Research Triangle Park.
Nortel will work with NDS as a reseller and as a joint marketer. NDS has developed a variety of technologies that are used for digital pay-TV services.
The two firms want to package NDS features with Nortel’s voice and multimedia capabilities. Together the companies plan to offer IPTV that includes caller ID, call handling, address book, click-to-dial, call-logs, instant messaging and other IP-based communication services.
"We chose NDS because it is a leader in the digital broadcast industry and has a proven middleware product that is well suited for IPTV communications integration," said George Riedel, chief strategy officer for Nortel. "Working together we can deliver a new set of exciting services which blend TV entertainment with voice and multimedia services."
Nortel and NDS are showcasing their solution at the IPTV World Forum this week in London.
