EarthLink is rolling out its wireless fidelity (WiFi) broadband network service in Philadelphia with a free introductory trial.

The Internet service provider contracted with the city to build a wireless network covering 135 square miles. The first segment, covering 15 square miles, is operational and is available through Jan. 21 at not cost.

After that date, the cost is $21.95 per month except in limited areas where access will continue to be free.

The network offers download speeds up to 1 megabit per second.

EarthLink is in the process of building several municipal WiFi networks.
