F. Ivy Carroll, the director of the Center for Organic and Medicinal Chemistry at RTI International, recently received a 2006 Research Achievement Award in Drug Design from the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists.

Carroll, a PhD, is a distinguished fellow at RTI.

The Association honored Carroll for his work in substance abuse research over the past 30 years. He developed two pharmacotherapies for the treatment of cocaine abuse and the prevention of relapse to cocaine abuse. They are scheduled to enter clinical studies in 2007. Carroll has also developed a diagnostic agent for Parkinson’s disease.

Carroll holds 34 patents and patent applications in organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry and drug abuse research. He received his doctorate in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
