RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. Jeffrey Wesler, an executive with IBM, will lead the Nanotechnology Research Initiative for the Semiconductor Research Corporation, the SRC said Thursday.
The SRC, an international consortium funded in large part by industry partners and based in RTP, is focused on advances in semiconductor technology.
The nanotech initiative will include “aggressive research”, the SRC said. Federal and state agencies will also be involved in the program.
The SRC wants to develop a replacement for current technology used in most integrated circuit technology known as CMOS, or complementary metal-oxide semiconductor.
“The concept of nanotechnology holds much promise for the continued advancement of the chip industry, as well as other industries,” Welser said in a statement. “The talent and collaborative culture of the SRC organization provide an outstanding combination of resources with which to create the breakthroughs that nanotechnology is expected to deliver for the world.”
Welser is director of next-generation computing technology at IBM’s Almaden Research Center and has been involved in high-performance semiconductor research for more than 20 years. One of his previous IBM positions was as director of high-performance CMOS technology.

Welser holds 21 patents. He received a PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford.
Welser replaces Hans Coufal, who has taken a leave of absence from the SRC.
