ATLANTA, GA. — Fans of the Fox TV hit “American Idol” used the Cingular wireless network to transmit 64.5 million text messages related to the show.

The number of messages soared from 41.5 million a year ago, according to Cingular.

Text messages included voting, participation in trivia contests, sweepstakes, chats, fan clubs and more.

As part of an expanded American Idol content menu, Cingular introduced ringtones and answertones related to select American Idol contestants within 24 hours after the show.
