RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — Exercising, tracking speed, time and distance, listening to music and needing to talk on the phone at the same time is something Sony Ericsson developers are making possible through one device.

The new W710i Walkman phone that was introduced Thursday is meant to provide all those capabilities — and even comes with an arm strap to keep the device in place. It also is equipped with a digital camera.

“Sony Ericsson has put quite a lot of thought into making this handset perfect for sporty types — it even comes packaged with own armband so you can have easy access to the controls when you’re out running,” wrote Tech Digest in the United Kingdom. “These controls, incidentally, will cover all the important things like FM and MP3 playback meaning you don’t need to open it up and get at the main menu.”

Cellular-News pointed out one feature for those serious about exercising and keeping a record: “There’s also a daily step counter that resets automatically at midnight and your progress is displayed even when the phone is on standby.”

The Sony Ericsson partnership includes a joint design and development operation in RTP.

“Sony Ericsson is setting a new standard for innovation, and we continue to create mobile devices with cool easy-to-use features, said Najmi Jarwala, president of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications (USA). “We are building on our success by delivering award-winning, iconic products across a broad range of price segments.”

The W710i was one of several new phones introduced by the company this week.

“These new handsets feature classic Sony Ericsson designs but also have a few extras that have us salivating like tech-hungry St Bernards,” said C/Net in the U.K. Other model numbers include the W850i, Z550i and the Z710i.

The Walkman W710i phone includes:

  • a motion sensor
  • fitness applications to measure running speed, distance and time — or count steps
  • a 2 megapixel camera with zoom lens
  • a 512 megabyte memory stick for music or other data storage
  • FM radio
  • For more convenience, earphones are designed with ear hooks to keep them from falling out, and the music mutes when a call is received.
The 710 can also be directly connected to a PC with a USB cable for music transfers.
