SoyMeds, Inc., a spinout of UNC Charlotte that is developing ways to produce edible vaccines made of soybeans, won the grand prize at Thursday’s Five Ventures conference at UNC Charlotte.

The company is a collaboration between two UNCC biology professors, Kenneth Piller and Kenneth Bost.

As the grand prize winner, SoyMeds receives $5,000 in cash, and will also receive mentoring and educational services.

Another UNCC spinout, Crystal Farm, Inc., won the top student team award of $2,000. It is developing electronic chip technology that is sturdier, has less defects and can withstand higher power, temperatures and frequencies.

Five finalists competed in a final round that featured grilling by venture capitalists and sales consultants. Others competing were Cardiovascular Resonances, LLC, a spinout from East Carolina University; KnowNow, from Duke University; and, based out of Wake Forest University.

The annual day-long competition is put on by UNCC’s Office of Technology Transfer.
