The management ranks at BellSouth are going to take a hit through April 30 of next year.

BellSouth said it is cutting 1,500 positions now through April. The cuts will take place in supervisory as well as non-supervisory positions. Most positions are expected to be reduced through voluntary severance packages, the company said.

“Reducing workforce is the toughest business decision a company has to make,” said BellSouth Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Duane Ackerman in a statement. “We have worked hard to avoid it, but many companies our size and particularly our competitors operate with lower overhead and fewer management layers.”

BellSouth expects to take a $95 million charge for the reductions.
