Richard Atkin, a former chief executive officer with two healthcare information technology companies, is the new president of Misys Healthcare’s Hospital Systems Group.

Atkin has spent the past year as a consultant. He has 12 years of experience in healthcare IT.

The Hospital Systems group provides support and services to more than 1,000 hospitals and hundreds of laboratories with a variety of IT services and solutions.

Atkin replaces Andrew Lawson who has assumed other duties for Misys with its strategic business development group.

“Richard is an experienced leader with intimate knowledge of the healthcare industry,” said Tom Skelton, chief executive officer of Misys Healthcare Systems. “With Richard’s background of propelling global healthcare companies forward, we’re confident he will build upon our successes, continue growing the business, and provide quality customer support for our clients.”

Atkin was CEO of Datex-Ohmeda in Massachusetts and also CEO of Spacelabs Medical. Both were part of Instrumentarium, a Finish company. He left those roles when Instruemtarium was acquired and has since operated as a consultant.

Atkin earned a master’s in business from the University of London’s Imperial College Business School. He earned an undergraduate degree in physics and material sciences at the University of Wales.
