Nortel is talking with Motorola about its decision to hire Mike Zafirovski as its new chief executive officer.

Motorola is trying to block Zafirovski, a former executive with the firm, from taking the job, citing a non-compete clause. Nortel announced plans to hire him, effective on Nov. 15, last week.

“The parties are in discussion to attempt to resolve this matter,” Nortel spokeswoman Patricia Vernon told Reuters on Friday.

Reuters also reported that Zafirovski would receive a base salary of $1.2 million plus millions more in bonuses and stock options.

Zafirovski would replace Bill Owens.
