Open source software developer JBoss is rolling out a new service to facilitate exchange of Java portal applications.

The PortletSwap is designed to offer a one-stop shop for the exchange of portlets. Portlets are reusable web components that include information such as enterprise application data and access, email and news.

JBoss is also offering what it calls a “PortletSwap Meet”, which is a competition through October 25 to “find the most creative and distinguished portlet designs”.

“Portal technology remains one of the most expensive areas of middleware today,” said Pierre Fricke, director of product management for JBoss. “As JBoss has successfully done with the application server, we are now bringing this high-end technology to the mass market at a zero-cost software license so that any enterprise can make portals a part of their business.”

JBoss released Portal 2.0 in June.
