Lieutenant Governor Beverly Perdue, the Senate’s presiding officer, today cast the tie-breaking vote in favor of creating a state-run lottery. The Senate vote was tied 24-24 until her vote pushed the passage. Prior to today, the Tarheel state was the only state on the East Coast without a state-run lottery. North Carolina Democratic Party Chair Jerry Meek made this statement after the N.C. Senate passed a lottery today:

“I commend the legislature for passing an education lottery. Our Party has always fought to give our State’s students better resources and greater opportunities to succeed. Our support for an education lottery is just one more example of our commitment to North Carolina’s students and their future.”
