BUFORD,Theragenics (NYSE: TGX) is shutting down two business units, closing some facilities and laying off 23 workers as part of a restructuring.

Theragenics said it wanted to focus on its ThereaSeed devices for the treatment of diseases such as prostate cancer and other medical device development. Among efforts being discontinued are radiochemical and plasma separation process technology as well as work in vascular and breast cancer research.

“In essence, we are shifting our talents and resources to products that have the potential to reach market sooner and yield returns faster,” said M. Christine Jacobs, the company’s president and chief executive officer.

A facility in Oak Ridge TN and another in Buford GA will be closed, the company said.
