Drug development firm AtheroGenics is expanding its management team with the creation of a vice president and general counsel position.

Named to the post on July 5 was Joseph Gaynor, Jr. He will report to Chief Executive Officer Russell Medford.

Gaynor worked for 10 years at UCB Pharma, his most recent position being vice president, general counsel and secretary for US subsidiaries of the Belgian firm. He also has worked for Lanier Worldwide and at the Atlanta law firm of Powell, Goldstein, Frazer & Murphy.

Gaynor is a graduate of the Emory University School of Law.
