WAKE FOREST,Sprint is teaming up with Motorola for a wireless broadband trial employing WiMAX technology.

Unlike the popular WiFi technology, WiMAX has a substantial range for wireless-enabled devices.

Sprint and Motorola said the trial would take place through the remainder of this year and into 2006.

Nextel, which is expected to merge with Sprint later this year, is also conducting wireless broadband trials. A new one is set to begin in the Washington, DC area.

Nextel recently decided to end a broadband trial it had been conducting in Research Triangle Park, according to users and media reports.

Sprint has offered some wireless broadband services.
