In a step that gives technology a more pro-active responsibility in public safety, the Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously Thursday to require Internet phone companies to provide enhanced 911 services to its customers, NewsFactor reports.

The ruling requires voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) providers to set in place E911 emergency calling capabilities within 120 days.
