BellSouth is rolling out a new class of virtual private network service called Network VPN.

The offering is designed to let enterprise network customers assign their own higher levels of priority traveling over networks.

BellSouth said it is the first provider to offer traffic prioritization from a customer site through the network. The offering is an enhancement to its existing VPN managed network product.

“As customers look to converge and integrate voice, video and data onto a single network, classifying traffic becomes vital to effective communications management,” said John Stuhrenberg, vice president of enterprise data solutions for BellSouth. “With high-priority and low-priority packets riding alongside each other, it is crucial to have a network that identifies and differentiates traffic types.”
