Digital Envoy, a developer of Internet Protocol intelligence solutions, and Whereonearth, which is focused on software and data to localize information, have teamed up to develop a local search and online advertising service.

Digital Envoy provides its IP intelligence system which determines online user information, such as geographic information based on IP addresses. Whereonearth offers additional global location information.

“(A)dvertisers can now select to target specific geographic regions in any part of the world defined by telephone area codes, postal codes, localities or administrative areas (such as boroughs or counties) for advertising,” the companies said in a statement.

“Advertising is then delivered only to those users whose IP addresses match the chosen geographic region,” they added. “This new depth in targeting brings offline techniques online, allowing advertisers and search providers to both increase the relevance of advertising and search results, as well as to create unique new local ad markets.”

Digital Envoy is based in Atlanta. Its patented technology is already used by such firms as AOL, DoubleClick, Symantec, Microsoft and Walt Disney Internet Group.
