WRAL TV in Raleigh and Sprint PCS are teaming up to offer local news, weather and traffic information to wireless users.

The service is available for customers of Sprint’s Vision multi-media offering.

WRAL will make available Doppler 5000 weather radar images, alerts and five-day forecasts plus images from 13 locations around the triangle for traffic updates. News stories and photos will also be offered.

“This new application gives us yet another way to serve the public,” said Jim Hefner, vice president and general manager of WRAL-TV. “In addition to using TV, radio and the Web, we are now delivering our news, weather and traffic to mobile phones. This makes sense in an increasingly wireless world.”

The service will cost $3.99 a month and includes unlimited access.

“We take pride in partnering with WRAL on this groundbreaking wireless initiative,” said Steve Parrott, state public affairs executive for the Carolinas, Sprint. “This will be the first time we have launched such an application with a regional broadcast organization.”

The application can be downloaded at WRAL.com, Sprint.com or through Sprint PCS Vision phones.
