Fonix, a developer of technology designed to deliver broadband Internet access and other services over powerlines, and Duke Power are expanding a trial of the service.
The companies said the trial would reach between 10,000-15,000 homes. The current trial includes 500 homes in the Carolinas.
LecStar Telecom, a subsidiary of Fonix, will work with Duke on the trial.
The companies said specific locations will be determined early next year.
Broadband by powerline technology enables high-speed access for Internet, voice and data services through a regular power outlet.
