Cisco plans to open a research and development center in Tokyo early next year.

The networking giant said it would invest $12 million in the center, which will open in February.

The focus of the center will be Internet Protocol-related technology, including multicast, wireless and the emerging Ipv6 standard plus security and quality of service applications.
