America Online is discontinuing its offering of broadband service in the Southeast and is telling customers to find a new provider or be switched to standard dialup service.

In a story reported by The Associated Press, an AOL executive said the broadband offering would be stopped across nine states on Jan. 17. The states include the Carolinas and Georgia.

BellSouth is offering a special promotional rate to AOL users who switched to that company, AOL said.

The AP quoted the AOL official as saying AOL would likely phase out the remainder of its broadband service coverage over the next year.
