Nortel is the latest member to join the WiMAX Forum, an industry organization that promotes interoperability and certification of broadband products.

WiMAX represents one of the next generation of network technologies. It is based on Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers standards 802.16 set for wireless metropolitan-area networks.

Nortel said it would offer expertise and assistance for WiMAX development as well as two other emerging technologies — Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO). Nortel says the new offerings could increase the efficiency and data rates for WiMAX transmission as well as using less spectrum and serving more customers from a single base station.
