A new study from Heavy Reading, the market research division of Light Reading, says the failure of telecom equipment providers to adhere to standards will mean trouble for Voice over Internet Protocol technology.

Light Reading and Heavy Reading focus on communications technology.
“Next-Generation Routers: A Comprehensive Product Analysis” says some service providers and enterprises will delay VoIP deployment as a result of the standards questions.

The paper includes analysis of products and marketing strategies from 26 manufacturers plus 119 routers. Among the companies reviewed are Cisco, Juniper Networks, Lucent and Nortel.

The authors said that without standards customers will not be able to mix and match equipment in building and expanding IP-based networks.
