EDISTO ISLAND,BellSouth is expanding its deployment of digital subscriber line (DSL) Internet service across South Carolina.

The communications company said a trial of new equipment at Edisto Island opens the way for the high-speed service to be made available to more rural communities and business parks that could not be serviced before cost effectively. DSL service is already available in 70 percent of the company’s coverage area.

BellSouth said its “rural broadband solution” would be deployed elsewhere across the Southeast.

The equipment can be placed in existing BellSouth facilities and no additional easement rights are required, the company said. Each device supports up to 96 customers.

The new solution will be added in 22 sites before the end of the year in South Carolina: Aiken, Anderson, Bamberg, Barnwell, Camden, Columbia, Edisto Island, Florence, Greenville, Hartsville, Orangeburg, and Spartanburg.

It will be installed in another 250
locations in BellSouth’s nine-state coverage area, and more will be added in 2005, the company said.
