Inveresk Research Group’s income jumped substantially from one year ago despite $5 million in costs related to its looming merger with Charles River Laboratories.

Inveresk (Nasdaq: IRGI) reported income of $9.3 million on $79.4 million in total revenues. Income was up 18 percent over 2003.

Net income was $7.8 million, or 20 cents a share. Earnings would have been 33 cents without merger costs, the company said. For the six months of 2004, Inveresk reported net income of $18.2 million compared to $17 million last year.
