Duke University freshmen will receive Apple iPods — loaded with information about the campus and geared for educational use — when they arrive on campus next month.

Under a $500,000 pilot program between Apple, which builds the iPods, and Duke, the university said the iPod initiative is designed “to encourage creative uses of technology in education and campus life.”

“This iPod pilot program is an exciting new component of Duke’s strategic plan, which seeks to use information technology in innovative ways within the classroom and across the campus,” said Provost Peter Lange, the university’s senior academic officer.
