Microspace Communications, a provider of point-to-multipoint satellite data services, recently delivered the new movie Shrek 2 to Galaxy Cinemas in Waterloo, Ontario.
The transmission was part of a pilot digital cinema project.
Microspace is working with DreamWorks LLC on the pilot.
“We now have moved from the lab to delivering the summer blockbuster movie to a live theatre with paying customers,” said Sam Matheny, manager of digital cinema development for Microspace.
The next phase of the program will include delivery to more theaters.
“While the industry continues to perfect digital servers and projectors, we are still hand-delivering electronic files to theatres,” said Mark Christiansen, head of operations for Dreamworks’ distribution. “Microspace’s satellite delivery is timely, secure and seamless.”
