DonorsChooseNC, an initiative designed to link teachers and citizens seeking to support education, says it topped its goal for the 2004 school year with more than $103,000 in donations.

The nonprofit group reported individuals and corporations from 32 states funded some 302 proposals in 157 classrooms. Of those, more than 43 percent went to Title 1 — or high poverty — schools.
DonorsChooseNC got underway in February.

“DonorsChooseNC has been able to accomplish so much in such a short period of time thanks to the financial and volunteer support of generous individuals and corporate sponsors and volunteers. This support has enabled us to provide resources for classrooms that would not have them otherwise,” said Missy Sherburne, executive director for DonorsChooseNC, in a statement.

“While we have met our initial fundraising goal, more support is still needed. A number of worthy proposals are still available to be funded,” she added.
