WINSTON-The field has been cut to six for the final round of the Triad Entrepreneurial Initiative’s annual FUEL competition.

The finalists are:

  • Cervius, Forsyth County – submitted by Scott Foster and Eric Button.

  • Cmaxx, Forsyth County – submitted by Michael Mitchell.

  • Laurie Bell, LLC, Guilford County – submitted by Laurie Jenkins.

  • Prova, Forsyth County – submitted by S. Scott Huber.

  • The Sandbox Learning Company, Forsyth County – submitted by Desiree McClimon and Amy Maguire.

  • Squirrel Defense Initiative, Guilford County – submitted by Bo Haeberle.
  • The top three winners will divide $80,000 in prizes, with $50,000 going to the winner. Companies will also receive free incubator space and mentoring services.

    The winners will be announced on May 13 in an awards ceremony at Volvo Trucks North America in Greensboro on May 13 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

    Here’s information about each of the finalists:

    Cervius: Cervius, a privately held biotechnology company, based in the Piedmont Triad Research Park in Winston-Salem, has obtained an exclusive license to the CSA blood test from Bio-White Diagnostics, LLC (Columbia, S.C.) and the Medical University of South Carolina (Charleston, S.C.). The CSA cervical cancer test has proven effective in patient studies as a blood-based test for screening large populations as well as an aid in monitoring treatment efficacy and metastasis. Cervius has developed a simple blood test that overcomes the deficiencies of the Pap smear test.

    Cmaxx: Cmaxx is a career development organization that has developed an innovative program to meet the specific hiring challenges of the pharmaceutical industry. Cmaxx brings the maximum value to its pharmaceutical clients by helping them achieve maximum profitability.

    Laurie Bell, LLC: Owner Laurie Jenkins saw accessorizing the outdoor room as a business opportunity, prompting her to create a new enterprise, Laurie Bell, LLC. Aware of the emerging technology of outdoor fabrics, she developed a line of pillows, floor cushions, umbrella covers, and table linens all geared for use in the new outdoor living/dining rooms.

    Prova: Prova designs and develops medical software to assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of acute coronary heart disease using Magnetic Resonance Imaging technology.

    The Sandbox Learning Company: The Sandbox Learning Company is a web-based comprehensive community and education solution for parents and professionals working with children with autism spectrum disorders. The company accomplishes this mission through a patent-pending training technique and a comprehensive resource toolbox, as well as a one-stop-shop for resources and related products.

    Squirrel Defense Initiative: Squirrel Defense Initiative was founded in 1997 to commercialize its unique award winning bird feeder, “The Solar Feeder.” The product uses an electric stimulus combined with a solar cell to deter squirrels from feeding.
