RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK–Smart Online has closed a $2.5 million financing round led by Atlas Capital, the company says.

Founded in 1993, Smart Online sells software applications to help start, run and grow small businesses. It originally sold its products through retailers, but shifted to Web delivery in 1998, pioneering a software-as-services (SaS) business model.

The company says it has more than 1.3 million customers for its Web-delivered software services. The software allows business owners to create professional documents and forms and cut management time on paperwork.

channel partners to gain broad market access in the fragmented small business sector,” notes Michael Nouri, Smart Online chief executive officer. “From inception, Smart Online has focused solely on the needs of the small business market.”

Smart Online also says it has hired Deb Loving as vice president of marketing. Loving has 18 years marketing and public relations experience with companies such as Ruder Finn, Agfa, and Bayer International. She also worked with Silicon Valley companies Adaptec SCSI and Raytheon.

Loving was a co-founder of CI Technologies in RTP, which was acquired by Seagate Technology in 1995.
