MEBANE,A 40 percent increase in the number of DSL subscribers helped Madison River Communications offset a loss of voice line customers in the third quarter, the company says.

Madison River added 6,097 DSL customers, a jump of 40 percent. The company lost 5,410 voice lines, leaving it with a net of 208,787 lines in service. That’s an increase of 687 over the same quarter in 2002.

The communications company also said it had operating income of $10.1 million on revenues of $46.4 million compared to $3.8 million in 2002.
