Raindrop Geomagic has acquired Cadmus Consulting, a Hungarian developer of new methods for computer-aided geometric design.
In conjunction with the acquisition, Geomagic has named Tamas Varady, former president and CEO of Budapest-based Cadmus, as its new chief technology officer.
Cadmus will now operate as Geomagic Hungary, with Varady also serving as managing director of the wholly owned subsidiary. Engineers in the new subsidiary will become part of the Geomagic software development team and will provide technical support to European customers.
Based in RTP, Geomagic provides geometric modeling software that transforms products from their physical form to a digital model for faster development, greater accuracy and automated inspection.
The acquisition of Cadmus extends Geomagic’s software reach beyond the accurate replication of a physical product into the realm of stylish surfaces commonly used in automotive body design and consumer products, the company says.
“Raindrop Geomagic is now the only company that can provide a complete set of tools for product development based on accurate digital representations of scanned physical parts,” says Ping Fu, the company’s president and CEO. “Our technology encompasses industrial styling, automated reverse engineering, custom manufacturing, and computer-aided inspection applications–.”
As Geomagic’s CTO, Varady will direct the company’s technology roadmap and be responsible for managing research and development efforts.
Varady founded Cadmus in 1991. He is also director of the geometric modeling laboratory and a senior research fellow for the Computer and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Along with Geomagic co-founder Herbert Edelsbrunner, an expert in what is known as discrete geometry, Varady brings a unique combination of talent to the company.
“Dr. Varady is one of the world’s foremost experts in a field known as continuous geometry. Rarely have two such experts been teamed together outside of academics,” Fu said of Varady and Edelsbrunner. “Not only have we acquired technology that gives us leading-edge software solutions, we are blessed with visionaries who have proven that they can transfer great research into great products.”
