DURHAM–Sabeer Bhatia, who sold Hotmail to Microsoft for $400 million, speaks to the Carolinas’ chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) at 6 p.m. tonight, Aug. 11 at Briar Creek Country Club.

Bhatia and his partner Jack Smith worked at Apple and were having trouble exchanging email about business ideas because they didn’t want to use the company system. They conceived the idea of Web-based email so people could exchange electronic messages privately from anywhere they had a connection.

Bhatia later founded Arzoo, which was intended to be the ultimate ecommerce destination on the Web, but shut the company down when the economy turned sour on Internet business.
