RALEIGH … The past week was good to the Research Triangle region, with news of a major expansion by a semiconductor manufacturer, an exit for the backers of a young wireless technology company, new life for former executives of several defunct firms and the promise of two University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill spinoffs.

Charlotte got into the act as well, with software developer NuTech Solutions grabbing $2 million from current angel investors and folks talking up future opportunities at an annual conference sponsored by the North Carolina Electronic and Information Technologies Association.

But the week belonged to the Triangle, with the biggest news being German chip maker Infineon Technologies promising to build an administrative center in Cary that will create up to 400 jobs over the next five years. State officials promised the company $9.5 million in incentives to win the project.

The other big local story was the sale of Avesair, a Cary firm that developed software to deliver advertisements and marketing messages to wireless phones, to InPhonic. More news on that will come Monday, when the Washington, D.C.-based company formally announces the deal and may provide insight into the future of the local operation.
