Sanswire Technologies is moving ahead with plans to deploy a nationwide broadband network utiziling airships known as Stratellites, but the firm will not be making an investment in the airship builder.

Instead, Sanswire said it retains rights to use the Stratellites for broadband transmission at a cost to be determined later.

The airships, which hover some 13 miles above the ground and provide two-way high-speed connectivity, are built by Telesphere Communications.

Sanswire also said it may buy airships later.

“We are excited about our new agreement with Telesphere. The arrangement works out better for both parties and is much more cost- effective for us than our original agreement,” said Michael Molen, Sanswire’s chief executive officer in a statement.
